Hickory Ridge Woodworking

Since 2011, Acoustic Remedy has been proudly crafting its products at Hickory Ridge Woodworking, a place with deep roots and a rich history. Originally founded on Hickory Ridge—just 15 miles from our current location—this workshop is surrounded by other charming ridges named after classic woods, like Oak Ridge and Walnut Ridge.

These picturesque ridges, known locally as bluffs, overlook lush, tree-filled valleys called coulees, giving this driftless region of western Wisconsin its endearing moniker—the Coulee Region. At the heart of this beautiful area flows the mighty Mississippi River, which has carved a stunning canyon through sandstone, reaching depths of 600 to 700 feet below the bluffs. This landscape came to life as Amish families migrated from the east, bringing their skilled craftsmanship with them. They established small, tight-knit communities, building simple yet inviting homes and workshops on movable foundations, creating a lifestyle largely untouched by the outside world.

Though Hickory Ridge Woodworking has relocated twice, its name has remained a cherished symbol of quality and tradition.

Our journey began when we met Enos, the passionate master cabinetmaker and founder of Hickory Ridge Woodworking. At the time, in 2011, we were just launching our own business and were introduced to the Amish community by Paul Thieman, the visionary founder of String Swing. That encounter sparked a fruitful partnership, and since then, Hickory Ridge has committed itself to exclusively crafting Acoustic Remedy products.

Fast forward to today: Hickory Ridge Woodworking has blossomed into an impressive 13,000 square feet of production and storage space, complete with a state-of-the-art photo booth and showroom where customers can explore our creations firsthand and witness the craftsmanship that goes into every piece.

The property also boasts a dignified old farmhouse, nearly a century old, transformed from an English-style residence into a traditional Amish home, featuring all modern utilities removed. Enos and his family live on-site, nurturing their growing family and firmly rooting themselves in this vibrant community.

At Hickory Ridge, traditional woodworking tools and techniques blend seamlessly with modern adaptations, as permitted by community elders. While our Amish craftspeople skillfully utilize a variety of hand tools, they also harness the power of a diesel engine that drives a line shaft beneath the shop floor, allowing for the operation of multiple machines. However, the final touch—the hand sanding—remains an essential step, ensuring that every Acoustic Remedy product meets the highest standards of craftsmanship and preparation for the perfect stain and varnish. Each item is lovingly made by hand, in small batches, with a commitment to detail that's unmatched—all thanks to Enos and his talented team.

Our relationship with Enos extends far beyond business; it has blossomed into a true friendship rooted in mutual support and shared experiences. As the business continues to grow, Enos's two sons are set to join the team, learning the art of fine woodworking alongside their father and carrying forward a cherished family legacy.

With products now reaching customers around the globe, Enos and his team take immense pride in their craftsmanship, knowing their work resonates with people far and wide. Acoustic Remedy eagerly looks forward to nurturing this partnership for years to come, dedicated to delivering exceptional, handcrafted products that bring joy to our customers worldwide.

Hidden view furniture

We first met Freeman Miller at the dawn of 2020, and it quickly became clear that we were in the presence of a true craftsman. With a wealth of experience in designing custom kitchens and exquisite cabinetry, Freeman embodies the spirit of his Amish heritage. In his world, a simple referral can open doors, allowing you to step into his high-end cabinetry workshop and secure a spot on his coveted build list. This approach is essential for navigating his bustling schedule, where quality craftsmanship takes center stage.

Freeman is an extraordinary individual—an old soul with a heart of gold. His workshop is nestled at the end of a serene gravel road, surrounded by some of the richest farmland imaginable. As you gaze out, rolling hills give way to ancient forests filled with majestic oak, maple, walnut, and hickory trees, creating a perfect backdrop for his creative endeavors.

Although Freeman's workshop may be smaller than the renowned Hickory Ridge Woodworking, it boasts the capability to produce cabinetry of the highest caliber. We've been fortunate enough to feature his stunning creations in our Low Depth ClimaCabs and Double-Wide ClimaCases. Each of these products is meticulously crafted at Hidden View, before being sent over to Hickory Ridge for final touches like glass installation, electronics, and hardware.

What sets Freeman apart is his choice to manage the finishing process in-house, rather than outsourcing. This decision gives him complete control over the quality and aesthetics of the final product. His expertise in finishing rivals his building skills, making him an invaluable part of our builder network. Beyond the ClimaCabs and ClimaCases, Freeman has also lent his talents to our Amp & Effects Pedal cabinets and embarked on exciting custom projects, including our exceptional road case for trade shows and the innovative inset wall humidors debuting in 2025. With each collaborative effort, Freeman continues to elevate our offerings and redefine what’s possible in craftsmanship.

Southside Finishing

From the very beginning of our journey with Enos at Hickory Ridge Woodworking, we’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with the talented Reuben Miller at Southside Finishing. In the Amish community, there's a fascinating tradition among cabinetmakers and craftsmen: rather than tackling the intricate process of finishing themselves, they turn to specialized finishers. Why? Because applying stains and varnishes is an art in itself, requiring not only meticulous patience but also a skilled touch—plus, it often comes with health risks that many prefer to avoid.

When Enos introduced us to S.S. Finishing, our excitement was palpable. It quickly became clear why a steady stream of craftsmen, from furniture makers to trim carpenters, flocked to their doors for finishing services.

Imagine crafting a piece of furniture without the hum of electricity! The finishing process demands creativity and a well-thought-out approach. The secret lies in an airtight reservoir paired with a unique weight system that can effortlessly reach pressures of 120-150 psi. At this sweet spot, the varnish is transformed into a fine mist, allowing for an impeccably smooth and delicate layer to coat the wood.

And let’s not forget about staining—a skill that truly requires an expert's hand. Some stains are loaded with pigment, making them a challenge to apply flawlessly. Moreover, each wooden species has its quirks; take Flame Maple, for instance—it accepts stains in a strikingly different way than Northern White Ash. The level of expertise required is impressive, and the results speak for themselves: the wood’s natural beauty is not just enhanced but preserved for years of enjoyment.
